چکیده

1. Logical language 1.1. Proposition, sentence and inscription Quine has argued in favor of the rejection of propositions. His argument can be summarized by the following syllogism: No entity without identity There is no criterion of identity for propositions No propositions Quine has been quite influential in the replacement of the expression propositional logic by the expression sentential logic to denote zero-order logic. But do we have a criterion of identity for sentences? And what is a sentence? Some people prefer sentences to propositions, because sentences seem more concrete and definite objects. Nobody has “seen” a proposition, propositions have no smell and no color. But what about sentences? Some people confuse sentences with inscriptions. It was already

The semantics/pragmatics distinction: a view from relevance theory

The assumption that sentence types encode proposition types was shaken by Donnellan’s observation that a sentence with a definite description subject could express either a general or a singular proposition. In other words, a single sentence type could have different truth conditions on different occasions of use. Relevance Theory holds a strong version of this “semantic underdeterminacy” thesi...

Emphatic Stress as Epistemic Conflict: A case study of Mandarin Chinese

This paper examines the semantics of sentence-final stress in Mandarin Chinese and gives a uniform account of the distribution and interpretation of emphatic stress. A phonetic production study shows that the use of sentence-final stress by Mandarin speakers is sensitive to the evidentiality of the context. A semantic rating study shows that listeners judge sentences with evidenced contexts as ...

Sentence, Proposition, Judgment, Statement, and Fact: Speaking about the Written English Used in Logic

The five ambiguous words—sentence, proposition, judgment, statement, and fact—each have meanings that are vague in the sense of admitting borderline cases. This paper discusses several senses of these and related words used in logic. It focuses on a constellation of recommended primary senses. A judgment is a private epistemic act that results in a new belief; a statement is a public pragmatic ...

Simulation semantics can revitalize the formalization of meaning:.Reply to comments on “Embodied language, best-fit analysis, and formal compositionality”

Yet every sentence is not a proposition; only such are propositions that have in them truth or falsity. Thus a prayer is a sentence, but it is neither true nor false. Let us therefore dismiss all other types of sentences but the proposition, for this last concerns our present inquiry, whereas the investigation of others belongs rather to the study of rhetoric or poetry. Aristotle (De Interpreta...

Reply to Comment on " on the Original Proof by Reductio Ad Absurdum of the Hohenberg-kohn Theorem for Many-electron Coulomb Systems "

Any mathematical proof is a game. As a game, it is based on a definite set of rules of logic reasoning which altogether constitutes the subject of logic. One of the simplest rules of the theory of logic is a denial of the truth of a given proposition that is expressed as a sentence. The truth of a proposition has to be denied by asserting its negation. Assuming, for example, that the propositio...
